Competency is characterised by the ability to demonstrate what skills and knowledge have been eviously acquired. It also includes attitudes, capabilities and behaviours that characterize excellent performance within a specific context. Competencies can translate strategic directions into action, clarify behaviours that support important values and principles, establish standards of excellence, focus learning, provide a basis for ongoing performance feedback, accelerate development of a learning culture, and identify and leverage high performers. Identifying competencies, therefore, is not just about enhancing the current knowledge, skills and performance of the existing workforce. It also requires a commitment to continuous learning and working to define the future.
